pando

pando is latin for “i grow” or “i spread.” it’s also the name of the largest organism on earth: a clonal aspen colony growing from a single root system that covers over 100 acres in central utah.

growth of smaller organisms over a larger body - whether an aspen tree over mountains, or lichens on a rock, or human settlements on a landscape - often follow similar ‘pando’ patterns.

work in this series is intended to mimic these growth patterns - both internally within each piece, and as the collection itself grows and colonizes an interior landscape.
